A historic village, treated like one
Millstone Borough is one of the smallest municipalities in Somerset County, a village along the Millstone River with a long history and buildings to match. Stone walls, old walkways, mature trees and plantings that predate the current owner are all normal here.
That calls for restraint. Pressure that is right for a modern concrete driveway can destroy old brick or soft mortar, and a heavy mower near a settled stone edge does damage that is expensive to undo. We use the gentlest approach that gets the result.
Mature trees and shade
Old properties come with old trees, which means deep shade, surface roots and real leaf volume. Turf under a mature canopy competes for light, water and nutrients and usually loses.
We keep a taller cut in shaded areas so the grass has more leaf to work with, avoid running wheels over exposed roots, and tell you honestly when a struggling patch would be better as a mulched tree ring or a shade planting than as another season of reseeding.

River ground
The Millstone River defines this borough, and properties near it hold moisture. Soft ground and mowing equipment are a bad combination, so we time visits with the weather and skip a day when the ground needs it.
That same moisture is why moss shows up in shade and why fungus can move through a thin lawn in a humid stretch. Sharp blades, a taller cut and clippings blown off wet surfaces do more good than most people expect.
Getting on the schedule in Millstone
Call or text (848) 702-6937 and tell us the address and what you want handled. We look at the property, walk it with you when you are home, and send a price for the work rather than a vague range. Millstone is a short drive from Manville, and we will walk an older property with you before quoting anything.
Estimates are free. Nothing starts until you say yes to a number you have seen in writing.
Common questions from Millstone homeowners
- Can you power wash an older brick or stone surface?
- Sometimes, and only after looking at it. Old brick and soft mortar can be damaged by pressure that is safe on modern concrete, so we assess the surface first and use the lowest effective pressure.
- Will your equipment damage old walkways and stone edging?
- Not if the crew is paying attention. We keep heavy machines off settled stone edges and hand trim close to walls and walkways.
- Grass will not grow under my old maples. What do you suggest?
- Usually a mulched tree ring or a shade tolerant bed. It looks better than thin turf, protects the roots and costs less than reseeding the same ground every year.
- Do you take small one time jobs here?
- Yes. A cleanup, a mulch install or a trimming visit can be booked on its own. Call (848) 702-6937.
